It occurs when quick, irregular impulses take over your heart\u2019s rhythm to stop it from squeezing effectively (or at all).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>heart attack<\/strong>\u00a0is a blood-flow issue to your heart, usually because of a blockage in an artery. It disrupts the pumping function of your heart, which can reduce or stop blood flow to your body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s break it down more with cardiologist\u00a0Andrew Higgins, MD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to tell the difference<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back to videoCardiologist Jacqueline Tamis-Holland, MD, explains the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cardiac arrest and heart attack are both medical emergencies involving your heart. Both can be very, very bad \u2014 even life-threatening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there are often key differences in how they look in the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>During a cardiac arrest<\/strong>, when the heart stops beating and shuts down, expect someone to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Collapse suddenly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lose consciousness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stop breathing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCardiac arrest symptoms typically start without warning,\u201d says Dr. Higgins. \u201cYou may or may not experience chest pain before you faint and become unconscious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>During a heart attack<\/strong>, when blood flow slows or stops, symptoms tend to be less dramatic and can range from mild to severe.\u00a0How a heart attack feels\u00a0can vary widely based on your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/sex-recorded-at-birth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sex<\/a>, age and underlying medical conditions, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Common symptoms include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chest pain or pressure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shortness of breath<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nausea or vomiting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sweating<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dizziness or lightheadedness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat may seem minor \u2014 like slight chest discomfort or shortness of breath \u2014 could be a warning sign of something much more serious,\u201d says Dr. Higgins. \u201cNever just dismiss what your body is trying to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can one cause the other?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cardiac arrest itself does not directly cause a heart attack. But a heart attack can lead to cardiac arrest if your heart\u2019s electrical system is disrupted due to the lack of blood flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA heart attack can create chaos in the heart\u2019s electrical system to trigger cardiac arrest,\u201d explains Dr. Higgins. \u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to recognize and respond to any symptoms so you can get treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What should you do for each?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re in a situation dealing with either cardiac arrest or a heart attack, your first move is the same: Dial 911 or whatever number brings emergency workers to your location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGetting immediate medical treatment should be your No. 1 priority,\u201d emphasizes Dr. Higgins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After calling for help, here\u2019s what else you can do in each situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the case of cardiac arrest<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immediate action is critical. Cardiac arrest can be fatal if CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) isn\u2019t started within eight minutes to help your heart begin pumping again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If an automated external defibrillator (AED) is available, use it to jumpstart the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTimely defibrillation could mean the difference between walking out of the hospital or dying,\u201d stresses Dr. Higgins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unless a heart rhythm is restored as soon as possible, your brain starts to die from a lack of oxygen and blood flow. The results can be fatal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you\u2019re reading this and are unsure&nbsp;how to perform CPR&nbsp;or use an AED, organizations like the American Heart Association, local schools, libraries and fire departments offer courses,\u201d shares Dr. Higgins. \u201cYou could save a life by preparing yourself now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In case of a heart attack<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A heart attack may not be as intense a situation as a cardiac arrest, but that doesn\u2019t mean you can relax. Action is needed, as a lack of blood flow to your heart can permanently damage or kill muscle within it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, while you wait for emergency crews to begin treatment, you can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Take medication.<\/strong>\u00a0If you have a prescription for a medication like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/drugs\/20423-nitroglycerin-sublingual-tablets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nitroglycerin<\/a>, take it while you wait for an ambulance to arrive. Another option? Slowly chewing 325 milligrams of aspirin may help reduce damage and prevent blood clots from forming.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Get comfortable.<\/strong>\u00a0Sitting in a semi-reclined position with your chest elevated can help reduce strain on your heart and lungs. It\u2019s best not to lie flat, as that may make breathing more difficult.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stay calm.<\/strong>\u00a0Panicking can cause your heart rate and blood pressure to rise, which can put additional strain on your heart.
